About Us

Sunrise Sign Language Academy can be likened to the break of a new dawn

Sunrise Sign language Academy came as a result of tragedy. In July, 2012, tragedy struck the Mapeta family.During the 3 weeks, Mr Mapeta became aware of a special group of people he had never consciously considered. In the children’s ward, there were children with ailments of all sorts he noted the communication gap between the deaf children and the Medical staff (doctors and nurses). This aroused a lot of questions in him:

1. Can a correct diagnosis be recommended when the doctor is not able to get a thorough medical history from the patient?

2. Would not the sidelined get better recognition in the community if their care givers would get to know how they really feel?

3. How can a person be said to have equal opportunities when the society does not know what that person expects?

A few months later, Mr Douglas Mapeta enrolled for Sign Language Studies in Zimbabwe (2012) and Kenya (2017) and also did Special Needs Education and still pursuing it.He has also done Translation and Interpretation with TOLIKA COMMS Zimbabwe.
